Binge factor – 4½ out of 5.
After all the controversy that encircled the release of this epic historical drama, it has to be said that the movie does live up to the peaked curiosity levels that surround it. However, that said, it doesn’t live up in the way you would expect it to. The darkness that Ranveer Singh brings to the movie, dominates just about everything else during the 160+ minutes of the movie’s runtime.
But before we dive into the darkness though, here’s a quick fact – this could possibly be one of the most visually stunning movies that Bollywood has ever produced. The visual quality of this movie is yet to be matched in Bollywood, more so if you opt in for the 3D experience.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali helmed movies have made a name for themselves for having plush illustrious set designs and charmingly elegant costume designs. The couturiers have done exceedingly well to recreate the princely look of medieval India, and the same goes for their production design team.
Coming to the plot of the movie, it revolves around the honour and valour of queen Padmavati (played by Deepika Padukone) and her husband Maharawal Ratan Singh (played by Shahid Kapoor) of the Kingdom of Chittor.
Deepika Padukone, who plays the protagonist, has done well to get into the skin of her on-screen character. Her dialogue delivery is just as immaculate as it was in ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and her looks are just as stunning too.
Shahid Kapoor, on the other hand, sizzles in a never seen before ‘heavily bearded avatar’ that also sports a dashing ‘handlebar moustache’.Shahid’s royal ‘Rajputana’ look does well to recreate on-screen the aura of a ‘righteous king’ of a prosperous kingdom. Everything is tinted with a shade of rose for them until the reigning Sultan-e-Hind – Sultan Alauddin Khilji (played by Ranveer Singh) sets his evil eye on the beauty of queen Padmavati.
Ranveer Singh, through ‘Padmaavat’, has put on display his histrionic dexterity and acting prowess. The darkness that he has infused in his on-screen character has ended up giving Bollywood one of the most demonic and dirtiest villains it has seen in a long time. From being a notorious womaniser to being a cruel tyrant intoxicated with ruthless power, Ranveer has played his role with such sheer intensity that his mere presence on-screen can fill you with a feeling of disgust. If you simply want to get a glimpse of his savagely barbaric performance, watch the video of the song ‘Khalibali’.
Aditi Rao Hydari plays the character of Mehrunissa who opts to be the companion of a young Alauddin Khilji when he isn’t the Sultan yet. All this, only to later find out about his heinously demented personality when Alauddin kills her father and reigning Sultan-e-Hind – Sultan Jalaluddin Khilji (played by Bollywood veteran Raza Murad). Hyadri does her job well of playing the character of a ‘damsel in distress’ who doesn’t leave the side of righteousness despite being daunted by a stifling marriage.
Jim Sarbh of ‘Neerja’ fame is too seen in the movie, playing the role of Malik Kafur. Having similar eccentric traits to Alauddin Khilji (other than that of being the ‘alpha male’), Malik Kafur is the devil’s ‘sidekick’.
Overall, the movie is well lifted by spirited performances, but storytelling seems a bit loose, especially when compared to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s previous directorial venture ‘Bajirao Mastani’.
To conclude, the bottom line is — the obsession that Ranveer brings through his acting, overshadows the bright side of things in ‘Padmaavat’ and makes it a nightmare that you would want to binge watch.
We would otherwise have given ‘Padmaavat’ a score of 3½ out of 5, but Ranveer Singh single-handedly adds a point to the tally; making ‘Padmaavat’ score 4½ out of 5 for its ‘Binge factor’.
